For centuries, a closed institution served as a final destination for socially transgressive women at Själö, an isolated island in the Baltic Sea. The outcast women were kept there in detention to be observed, studied and measured—in much the same way as the scientists now focus on the surrounding nature at the research center the place has been converted to. While a young scientist is collecting samples on the island, the past emerges in the whispers of the unsent letters and empty rooms of the hospital. The space fills up with hidden memories as the invisible archives become alive. Whose stories are remembered and whose are forgotten?

Lotta Petronella is filmmaker, artist and curator based between Barcelona and Helsinki. She has worked with and on islands for the last 10 years and has 15 years of experience as director, producer and writer of documentary and art films. Her films have been shown internationally at film festivals, art galleries, and broadcasted widely. For the last 10 years she has worked with and on islands as a filmmaker and curator. Islands are places that allow us to dream and fantasise, they are also places that isolate and segregate. Petronella’s work ponders on the eternal and question of our existence as human beings: Who are we and where are we going? Petronella is trained as a fine artist at Chelsea College of Art in London (1999) where she worked and lived for over a decade collaborating on a number of film and television productions as a camera operator, editor, costume designer and composer including BBC, Channel 4, Discovery Channel and Fim and Video Umbrella. She holds a MA in Creative Documentary from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona (2017). In 2015 she received the Stina Krook Stipend Award for her work as an artist.
