In 2 or 3 Tigers, Singapore artist Ho Tzu Nyen explores the figure of the weretiger: a shape-shifting being crossing the ontological boundary separating the human from the animal. In Malay cosmology, weretigers were seen as communicating with the world of the ancestors and spirits.
The work takes its cue from the lithograph, Road Surveying Interrupted in Singapore (c. 1865). The print depicts George Drumgoole Coleman, the colony’s Superintendent of Public Works, and his entourage of convict-laborers under attack by a tiger. The tiger leaps at the tool used for the land survey, the theodolite —an image that serves as an allegory for the rupture of colonial modernity.
The figures from the print have become digitally animated characters, with Coleman and the tiger, like sun and moon, orbiting each other as they transform into each other. Thus, history’s repressed is mapped onto the genre of the animated moving image—a genre that has always been crossing ontological boundaries, the powers of shape-shifting, and human-animal metamorphosis. 2 or 3 Tigers is part of a long-term research project that interrogates histories of and from Southeast Asia. The research has taken the form of theatre performances such as Ten Thousand Tigers (2014), various film installations, text, and lectures.

Ho Tzu Nyen makes films, installations, and performances that begin as engagements with historical and theoretical texts. His recent works are populated by metamorphic figures such as the weretiger (One or Several Tigers, 2017) and the triple agent (The Nameless, 2015), under the rubric of The Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia, an ongoing meta project. One-person exhibitions of his work have been held at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art (2021), the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM] (2021), and the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art (Oldenburg, 2019). He represented the Singapore Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale (2011). Recent group exhibitions include the 13th Gwangju Biennale (2021), Aichi Triennale (2019) and 2 or 3 Tigers at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2017). Together with Taiwanese artist Hsu Chia-Wei, he also co-curated The Strangers from Beyond the Mountain and the Sea, the 7th Asian Art Biennial (2019) at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
